1. INTRODUCTION:

With the advancement of science and technology our life styles are influencing and changing with a greater pace. Over the past few years there are increasing interest towards green revolution in every sector and library is one of them. Small steps in going green can have a big impact for the library’s image. A small financial input can produce an important marketing outcome. Green libraries are a part of larger green building movement and these are also known as sustainable libraries, which not only help current generation in adequate utilization but also preserve libraries and its materials for future generation. Libraries of today should incorporate green elements into their operations. In fact, there are several reasons why libraries should incorporate green features into their buildings. It is vital for the health of library users and the mother earth on which we people live. Green library include green and natural steps like careful site selection which maximize indoor environment quality, use of natural resources in construction of library building as well as it involve conservation of natural resources like water, energy, and paper etc.

2. What is the Green Library Concept ?

The green library concept emerged in the early 1990s and it is gaining popularity in the field of library and information science profession. Green library is an emerging concept because of its various benefits and significance to the society. Some of the advantages of Green libraries are reduced cost of energy consumption, water conservation, solar energy utilization and environment friendliness. According to New World Encyclopedia ‘Green Library’, also known as a ‘Sustainable Library’ is, "A library built with environmental concerns in mind." Many librarians and other information professionals are taking action to ensure that their workplaces will be environmentally friendly. This depends on working with institutional initiatives or working out what needs to be done and gathering institutional support for action. The library professional also trying to develop such a kind of library that will be minimize the electricity consumption, energy efficient and environment friendly. ‘Green’ or ‘Sustainable Libraries’ are the structure that is designed, built, renovated, operated, or reused in an ecological and resource efficient manner. It’s a collective effort of all mankind to make green planet by reducing global warming

Shah, Sudhir Kumar and Shah (2015) have described the term “Green” and the various challenges being encountered by librarians to implement the Green Library project. (Vijayalakshmi, 2014.) On his article on “Greening the Library for sustainable development” gives information about the Green Library or Sustainable libraries initiative in India and rest of the world.

4. OBJECTIVE:

Main objectives of this Study have given below:

1. Create an environmental awareness among Users. 2. Introduce the Concept of Green Library to Users. 3. Contribute little efforts to make a green earth. 4. Promote green library movement to academic Professionals.

5. ELEMENT OF GREEN LIBRARY:

There are various paths to achieve sustainability in the libraries and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system is one of them and it was developed by United States Green Building Council (USGBC) in year 2000. Many of the library professionals of today are working on the idea of green library, which will use natural and regional construction material, minimize consumption of water and electricity, and also use environment friendly technology. Main elements of Green Libraries are follows:

A. Community & Locality:

Library is the heart of any institution. It should be at an appropriate site or locality so as to make users concentrate on their reading or study. Library should be in a perfect locality such as away from the noise zone like club, auditorium, entertainment hall etc.to make patron concentrate on their study. The proper examination of site is necessary for reduction of the pollution from the construction activities.

B. Constructional Material:

There are many standards and protocols available in India and outside to make a green building by using recyclable and environment sustained materials. IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) is a part of CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), offers a variety of services like green building rating programs, training programs, certification service program, etc. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a nationally accepted program planning environmentally compatible high performances green building for a healthy environment. Use of locally available material can reduce the cost and pollution in transportation

C. Energy conservation:

A library can have sufficient number of windows, glass windows, use of natural light, use of energy efficient bulbs and lights, etc. Even required electricity can be generated using direct sunlight by planting solar system on the roof top of library building. Proper ventilation system should be designed in building for fewer requirements of lighting and air conditioning. Electricity can be generated using direct sun light by planting solar system on the roof top of library building. Use of energy sources which are nonpolluting and renewable energy potential like solar, wind, geothermal, low impact hydro, biomass and bio-gas strategies, etc. Also using of low energy consuming bulbs and lights in non-reading areas during night time indirectly help library financially and save electricity as a whole.

D. Indoor air quality:

Proper ventilation system should be design for good air quality. The more air ventilator planned the more it reduces the electricity consumption. There are various Plants which filter air of the building like spider plant, aloe Vera, Boston fern and English ivy etc. Inside the library building there is the need of a quality air. For this proper plantation is needed in the surrounding campus, which provides clean and pure air and also make library a cool place. Also trees gives pleasant air and it control air conditioner operation during summer.

E. Water conservation:

There are many different ways for libraries to conserve and make optimum utilization of water like rainwater harvesting system, use of low flow fixtures, and waterless urinals. Moreover, library can reuse of waste water and rainwater for plantation and gardening, and for flushing in toilets. By looking in to the matter a library can reuse of waste water and rainwater in plantation, harvesting and flushing in toilets. Design the building sewage system which uses waste water or non-potable water. A water tank could be designed for storing rain water, recycled grey water, or treat water for sewage conveyance

6. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF LIBRARIAN IN GREEN LIBRARY?

Every Library should adopt this concept and every librarians and all other belonging to the community should be well aware of this concept. Librarian should always make efforts to promote green library movements by using different online tools like social media. Librarian motivate users to participate in green library project by introducing them with the benefits of green Library. The Librarian constantly willing to work under the Eco-library system and identify those people who are willing to work in this environment. Librarian may play an important role to bring out a balance of the two parameters i.e. economy and ecology which are very crucial for making healthy, prosperous and sustainable libraries. He can promote green library tools, techniques to encourage others. Librarians have always been a key contributor to community learning efforts and it is also appropriate that they take a leadership role in sustainability movement.

7. INDIAN INITIATIVES TOWARDS GREENING INDIA:

India is a developing country and it is the second highest populated country in the world.

India has been ranked third on the list of top 10 countries in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design outside America, according to the latest US Green Building Council report In Asia‟s first LEED Gold rated Library building is Anna Central Library, Chennai. Many of the Indian Libraries have already started on conceptualizing and implementing provisions for natural lightings, energy savings, provision of natural air, cleanliness and proper disposal of waste Products of Libraries etc.

8. WHY LIBRARIES WOULD WANT TO BUILD GREEN?

Emergence of new technologies and instrumentsraise the risk to environment and which raise alarm to save the earth as quickly as possible. There are Two main reasons why libraries would want to build green First, the cost of constructing green buildings has become affordable. It is now possible for libraries to build green buildings on conventional budgets. Second, most readily available energy resources are finite resources. It is vital to the health of the planet and our libraries’ budgets that we use these energy sources prudently. Green library not only saves the earth but also help in achieving sustainability.

9. ADVANTAGE OF GREEN LIBRARY:

to the health of the planet and our libraries’ budgets that we use these energy sources prudently. Green library means eco-friendly library which attract all type of users. Green libraries provides better health (physical as well as mental. Green libraries help in saving earth for future generation. Green libraries help in saving resources like electricity.

10. SUGGESTIONS FOR MAKING GREEN LIBRARY:

Turning off lights when they leave their offices. Pulling paper out of trash bins and using Using plastic sheeting strips to keep cold air out in the winter. Purchasing printers that duplex and have a standby energy mode. Placing light sensors among the stacks. Using stairs rather than elevators. Recycling returnable beverage containers, with a recycle box by the vending machines from which the Food Bank picks up the containers. Using two wastebaskets in each office, one for trash and one for paper. Advantages of Green libraries are reduced cost of energy consumption, water conservation, solar energy utilisation and environment friendliness.

11. CONCLUSION:

Government should encourage the green library and guide to the all the libraries for making green libraries. The concept of Green Library is very important for both the user and the library itself. “Going green” and environment friendly, sustainable information systems and services are serious issues requiring immediate attention of librarians. The green library or sustainable is a modern library where minimize electricity consumption and maximum use of renewable sources like air, sunlight, woods. Now days it is much more needed for a library to greening the library environment. Many national and international bodies are extending their help making libraries a green place. However, along with these bodies, library users, librarians and government should take initiatives and actively participate in green library movement making it successful.
